It was the summer of 2007 and wildfires were roaring from Santa Barbara to the US Mexico border. The Santiago fire was one of many, it began on October 21st, 2007 in the foothills north of Irvine and east of the city of Orange in Orange County, California.

The number of animal that became homeless or lost was staggering. Shelters everywhere were filled to capacity. There were many displaced puppies and everyone loves a puppy. I was only four months old and forty pounds with feet as big as an ox.
I was worried that I wasn't going to be the first to find a home.

Then she showed up, "my human", her name is Debra Jo and she was looking for a dog just because it was finally time for her to do so. Day one she saw me, day two she visited, day three a chicken got lose in the kennel area and everyone came unglued. Dogs were barking and people shouting you can believe the ruckus that a scared little chicken caused.

I never retreated to the rear of the cage in fear and I never charged to the front in hopes of landing a home. I just was, nothing more nothing less. So I acted no different when the feather bird stopped panic stricken right in front of my cage. I turned my head sideways to check it out as if to say, "what are you?" and that is when she fell in love. I was on a five day hold due to being lost roaming the streets near the Santiago fire areas. Debra Jo was there day three, day four and day five too. The next day I was free to go home with the first person who wanted me. Debra Jo went home that night and couldn't sleep. She was excited, she was scared she would lose me to some one who may get there first. She couldn't stand it! So she got out of bed and went to the shelter and sat there with her back touching the gate marking her place in line as place number one! It was 2:15 AM! Right from the start I was wanted, I was important and I was number one! I went home on November 6th, 2007 to my new family and home. I have two humans, a sister Sam who is a Siamese cat and a couple of brothers Rocko and Daisy who are Sulcata tortoises.
I am so lucky, I am such a lucky dog. Life is grand.

Now I can rest

We drove straight to the pet store because I didn't have my own collar or leash. I got to ride in the shopping cart as all puppies do and on my first day I even nabbed my first bird! It was the start of many trips back to the pet store and many more birds in my future. It was also the beginning of many great days to come!

Emma Chiapuzio

bullet

I was born on June 21st, 2007, which means my birthday is on the first day of summer. What a great day for celebration.

I am a black Labrador mix. My human says I am mixed with Donkey because I tend to just lay down when I don't want to go somewhere. (Like trying to leave Dog Park.) Though according to many canine professionals it is more likely that I am mix with Black Great Dane. I have many physical traits of both however my temperament is all Dane.

I am a spayed female.

I have an unusual white marking. A perfectly shaped downward facing arrow on my chest. It matches my being so much that I sometimes get referred to as Emma Zen Chiapuzio. I am in name as in presences a truly a downward facing dog.

Thank You
for picking ME!

Day one I didn't even have a collar. I sat in the front seat and stared at her all the way to Petco. I was so relieved;
I had my own Mom.
Someone who wanted me, someone who'd love me, I just couldn't stop staring at her.

Nicknames

AKA "Big Foot"

I came home at 4 months and 40 nearly pound. I had HUGE feet and my humans called me, "Big Foot". I grew into them in no time at all. At one year of age I was 85 pounds of pure healthy dog and even thought my feet didn't stick out like they use to my humans still call me, "Big Foot" now and then.

Emma was ultra calm even as a puppy. So when you walked in the door instead of running, jumping, barking or nipping. She would just walk, yes walk, in slow motion towards you with her head held a little low and wiggle her butt like you've never seen a butt wiggle. She has wiggled so hard that she has actually fallen over a few times.
